When larger diameter pipe needs to be installed under roadways, small
waterways, railroads or other permanent structure the solution is the horizontal jack and bore method. Most water transmission
and distribution specifications require a steel casing to be installed to
shield the material carrier pipe. In order to install this type of casing two
large excavations must be made to accommodate a small track, similar to a
railroad track for the auger engine to drive on. The other excavation is the
receiving pit where workers will connect cap the casing and connect the carrier
pipe to fittings to bring it back up to a less deep more workable depth. In
most installations the launch pit where the auger engine operates must be
almost 30' long and a depth 2' below casing invert elevation. Casing must be
cut down to 10' lengths to get in between shoring unless a bench or slope cut
excavation is made where there is no shoring required. A typical jack & bore
operation takes special planning and at some point as the bore diameter size
increases an OSHA tunneling and mining permit is required. All work is inspected with approved pipeline inspection methods.
